A reptile (or reptile , according to another form accepted by the Royal Spanish Academy ) is a vertebrate animal that lacks legs or what he has them very short , so, when walking, rub the ground with your belly. These are animals that can be oviparous or ovoviviparous and that have a variable temperature.
The skin of reptiles is covered with keratin scales , a protein substance that is rich in sulfur. In this way, reptiles can live in very dry habitats, such as deserts.
These vertebrates they have a pulmonary respiratory system and communicate in various ways, either through the emission of sounds, visually or through pheromones.
Reptiles form one of the evolutionary branches of amniotas . They arose in the period Carboniferous from the tetrapods , the clade of vertebrates with four limbs.
When it comes to being able to classify reptiles, two large groups are usually established, which are what are called anápsids and diapsids. The first of these can be explained that it is basically made up of turtles while the second is made up of two other differentiated sets: the arcosaurios and the lepidosaurs.
Among the animals that are framed within the typology of the arcosaurios we would have the crocodiles. These are divided into fourteen species and have as their main hallmarks the fact that they have a life that can reach 80 years, that they have a hard and scaly skin, that feed on a wide variety of animals and that they choose as habitat tropical places such as, for example, those that exist in Africa or America.
We are currently faced with the fact that crocodiles are subdivided into two large families: mekosuchinae and crocodylinae. The first one has recently become extinct and was made up of species that could be found in both Australia and Oceania.
In the case of the second family, what should be stressed is the fact that it is made up of reptiles such as alligators, alligators or gavials.
Returning to the second group in which we divide the diapsids, the lepidosaurs, we have to expose that it is basically made up of three clearly defined species: the tuataras, which are similar to the iguanas and that are in the New Zealand area; Lizards and snakes.
The lizards or lacertilios they make up the widest suborder of reptiles, by including the Lizards , the iguanas and the chameleons , among other animals. It is estimated that, at present, there are about 5,000 species of lizards.
The snakes or offices they are another suborder of reptiles, in this case characterized by the absence of limbs and by elongated bodies. There are snake species that have poisonous bites.
Another suborder within reptiles is the turtles or chelonians , which have a shell that protects their internal organs. Turtles have no teeth: their jaw is covered by a corneal beak similar to that of birds.
